Crossbow Info
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:54:54 AM »
I have a friend who is hunting in a firearms restriction area and wants to use a crossbow but neither he nor I know anything about crossbows.  He is willing to pay about $500-$800.  What crossbow would you reccomend for him?  Is there any other tips you can give to him?  Thanks

Unless he is a disabled hunter with a special permit to use the crossbow it is illegal here in WA.

Page 67 of the regs states that a hunter that has a modern firearm tag may use a crossbow in a firearm resticted area.

Anyone in a firearm restricted unit during modern firearms.

Firearm Restriction Areas
The firearm restriction areas listed on this page
have been established by the Washington Fish and
Wildlife Commission. Centerfire and rimfire rifles
are not legal for hunting in these areas.
In firearm restriction areas, hunters may hunt only
during the season allowed by their tag.
Archery tag holders may hunt during
archery seasons with archery equipment.
Muzzleloader tag holders may hunt during
muzzleloader seasons with muzzleloader
equipment except in the GMU 652
restriction area outlined for King County.
Modern firearm tag holders may hunt
during modern firearm seasons with bows
and arrows, crossbows, muzzleloaders,
or revolver-type handguns meeting
equipment restrictions, or legal shotguns
firing slugs or buckshot.

It is for anyone with a Modern Firearms tag during modern firearms season (except for disabled persons who have a crossbow special use permit; they can use them in archery seasons).
I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood.
