I want to try it this year, any tips on a few places to start other than finding the fleet?

I hear raccoons make good crab bait.

Conventional wisdom is that the east side of the archipelago is better early in the month.  The west side of Cypress will get pounded by boats on whichever side of Tide Point the eddy forms on (north side on a flood and south side on an ebb), but there are some other pockets elsewhere around there that hold fish sometimes.  I think tide point is popular because it is really pronounced and easy to find, but if it is too crowded I usually try to find another point where the water is doing the same thing and fish that instead.  I.e., treat it like a river and look for the back eddy.

West side of San Juan is nice, though, because it can absorb a ton of boats and not feel too crowded.

I'm also going to qualify my previous post by saying I have slightly better than average success in the islands but not much better than average.  The old idiom about 10% catching 90% really holds true up there.  I fish up there a few times each year but I'm admittedly definitely not in the 10%, so I'll defer to any better advice out there.

Fishing on west side of San Juan has been unreal. Lots of big wilds around. Don’t think the 1400 fish quota is gonna last through the weekend.

This blows can’t believe it’s over already. Got a feeling area 9 is only gonna be open for a week.

Depends, last year the fishing was lousy and it stayed open a long time.  If it's anything decent then yeah it will be over in a few days.
