Blacktail bucks in the rain - where are they?
« on: September 27, 2021, 04:17:24 PM »
Yesterday I was out in the rain and I ran across some deer(does unfortunately) right where I thought they’d be - bedded in some sparse reprod 20 yards from the brush line - and it got me thinking… where will the bucks be hanging out in the rain?

Any tips as far as terrain? Slope? Benches? Big timber? Reprod too? I know there’s not really going to be a “cheat code” but there’s gotta be places one can spend time and run higher than average chances of running across a buck.

Blacktails don’t care if it’s raining, I’ve seen them in the worst down pour you can imagine bedded out in the middle of a clear cut. It’s super noisy then, and they can see long distances front of themselves with the wind at there back.😉

So you’re telling me they’ll be in the same places as the does?

I figured the bucks would be in more secluded areas

In my experience if it’s not raining it’s almost a waste of time. Never killed a blacktail when it wasn’t raining.

This buck was 50 yards off the road in a heavily traveled piece of state land
They are there

They're basking in it, feeling right at home.  You know when its sunny so you go out and enjoy life, I think blacktails see clouds, darkness and rain the same way.

I agree with the exception of the evening. I find that they more reliably come out during the last hour or so of light. Nothing like when it’s raining of course, but if it’s nice out I won’t even bother hitting the woods until the late afternoon at the earliest.

Nice buck! Was he in reprod or timber?

I’ve gotta be upfront - while I can find them in reprod and clear cuts I absolutely suck at hunting timber. I feel like every time I set foot in there I get stupider and I get the feeling that I don’t know where I should be looking or going.

Do I just stick to the edges nearest to the adjacent clear cut or reprod? Do I venture deeper in? How deep? Does topography matter?

So many questions.

I’m also asking these questions as it relates to bucks. I feel fairly confident finding does - they’re usually fairly plentiful.

Thanks
I’ve shot lots of blacktails walking roads
I like the clear cut edges corners and pinch points
I stump sit walk and glass
Bad weather wind rain is the best
I’ve shot a couple of nice ones but if it’s a 2pt or better I dump em
That buck was heading through a cut to bed
I was walking back to the truck and saw him standing there looking at me
Good luck
You can’t kill them laying on the couch
It’s all time in field

I've only killed 1 blacktail that wasn't in a clear cut or reprod and all of them have been in the late season.

Usually either in the dense timber you find chanterelles in or on the open timber edges on the reprod side.  But they typically stay active when wind is a factor.  Windy rainy days are by far the best days to hunt black tail.  When trees are blowing down and you know a buck is in the area, find a spot to glass out of the way of a widowmaker and sit down and wait.

What’s the best way to hunt the timber? Hunt the edges?
