Waiting for results
« on: May 03, 2009, 10:15:05 AM »
I think this is the proper thread to put this little story since trail cam photos will follow. Yesterday was my hunting buddies first day he could get away from watching the kid (he's laid off right now), so we headed to a place we have been wanting to check out for awhile. We get there and slamming the door makes 50 cows jump and run. Alright we may have found a good spot, so we start to hike. Within 10 minutes I see 4 grouse, and find 2 Morrels (sp). Then it got slow for about 30 minutes. My buddy sees a can off the road and tells me he is going to take a leak and get the can. As I continue up the trail I smell something funny. The smell doesn't register right away so I start looking around. I find this!

So now I am on high alert because of the unfamiliar smell and fresh cat tracks. I start to look around and notice a torn up log. My first thought was that is odd, I didn't know cats tore up logs.  :dunno:

So then my eye catches the prize sitting about ten feet down hill from the struggle was this!!

When I got close to take the photos the smell reminded me of a freshly killed beef. The carcass was still hot to the touch so it couldn't have been more than 2 hours old. So we spent the rest of the afternoon going home and getting the trail cameras. Since both cams are sitting at home not being used, because snow levels are to high to put them where I want, I set one for video and one for still shots. When I go get it on Friday I am hoping to have some great cat and maybe bear pics to share! Oh yeah and maybe some nice elk teeth also!

Wow. Can't wait to see the kitty. To bad the season's closed right now. You could just sit on the calf till the kitty returns. Then it wouldn't kill off the herd you jumped earlier.
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.

Too bad for the elk but the pics should be awesome, get them up here when you can.

Do a little CSI work around the neck and look for these marks...

Sometimes they are hard to locate, so skin the neck out a bit, going down the wind pipe and look for teeth marks or bruising...

You will get a host of shots...A buddy and I came across a kill with the cat still on it and did the same thing, hurried back to get the camera..We got over 150 still shots..

We did as much CSI work as I felt comfortable doing! When we found it the cat hadn't even started eating yet. I am pretty sure it was close watching us to see what was going on. We could hear something rustling around in the bushes about 50 yards away, and I am sure that a cat could cover 50 yards faster than I could draw my pistol. Even though my buddy had his pistol in hand and ready I was still slightly uncomfortable. I could see some claw marks on the face, and you could see where the claws had ripped through the ear. I was actually surprised at the amount of claw marks on the elk, and all the bite marks on the neck. It was way cool, but a definite adrenaline rush at the same time. Friday after class (10:00), already counting down the hours, my buddy and I will be going back in to recover the cams and hopefully some nice ivories to boot. Hopefully I will have good pics and video since I set up 2 cameras at the same spot!!

Luvtohnt,  Maybe you need buy a Hat with paint two Real Eyes on Rear so it will make them stay away little longer wonder if you were look at them  :P.

In India they use both front and fake eye on rear to keep Tiger away. It works GREAT!

Hope we all dont get hurt. Keep handgun full loaded!

Brandon,

You may want to check it sooner...We were on ours daily and glad we did as the cat moved the carcass quite a ways from its original location, so we were able to move the camera also.. After 3-4 days of constant feeding it left..Then coyotes came in and they dont cache kills back up so the crows were all over it..

Go in twos and have someone just standing by watching...

Between my class schedule and my buddies schedule I don't think I could get up there before Friday. Maybe I need to find someone who wants to go stand guard for me while I move the cameras on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. Any takers?

Hmmm....class vs. cougar pics...boy, gitch'er priorities straight!  :chuckle:  Seems kinds of selfish to think about yourself when you've got a captive audience here waiting to see that cat!  You can always go to class next week.
