Browning BAR 30-06.
« on: October 27, 2021, 07:45:30 PM »
Any Browning historians on here? My Father-in-law (who lived with us the last 4 years) passed away this last June. He left behind a Browning BAR 30-06 rifle. We are trying to figure out what he left behind. We have tried serial lookup and none of the numbers match up. We think it is an older firearm. Any help would be appreciated.

It has a factory engraving of an antelope on one side of the receiver and an elk on the other side. I think it is a Grade 2 made in 1969….just not sure. There are family members involved that idolize money so I thought I’d get this value right so that there are no issues later. I just wouldn’t mind hunting with it this upcoming elk season as I know he would like that!

Does it say that it was made in Japan or Belgium on the barrel

I have a Browning BAR in 30-06 as well.  Belgium made. Very good guns.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I have this same gun (inherited from my dad). He probably bought it in the late 60s, maybe early 70’s. Made in Belgium.

Yep. It looks just like that one. He shot a few bear, a few elk, a few coyotes, a bobcat and about 40 deer with it. Belgium made. So far, the serial number lookup I’ve tried didn’t offer much information. I’m pretty sure there are better serial number lookup resources out there. I just have to find them.

See if this helps,  I use this site for O/U Shotguns I've only had one that I could not find.

The serial number is 585**m9. It looks like it kinda falls into a gray area during a change in the way Browning did their serial numbers….before 69 and after 69 kinda thing. I think it’s a 1969 manufacture. Thanks for the replies.

Yep. I went to Browning main page serial lookup. The first one I went to (the other day) was off of a forum that wasn’t user friendly and didn’t seem to make much sense. Thank you.

Bottom line, super cool gun.  Not a 500 yard gun.  Go kill stuff with it and channel the love.. Pass it on.

Exactly! I’ll more than likely buy it from the estate and continue to use it periodically as it was intended. He’d like that. I’ve just got to come up with a value so that I can pay my share, cut that “cord” and use it as I think he would like!
