Long travel spring for jerk string
« on: December 04, 2021, 01:35:28 PM »
Making my first jerk string, the only springs I could find at Home Depot don’t really travel that far. I need something that doesn’t take much to stretch the spring and allows me to stretch it a few feet then have it pull back...

Get a bungee cord, much easier.  You can make them as long as you want.

I got 1/2 pvc 4 way joint

1/2 pvc pipe

Cut the pipe into 4 sections,   3-4 feet long

Bungie cord off the roll, abou 10 feet

Make a + out of the pvc, stretch the bungie through the middle and secure at the end of all 4 corners.

Its like those snap together tent stakes with the bungee through the middle

Attach anchor with a couple feet of bungee on it, attach your jerk cord at the opposite end, attach a decoy on all 4 corners

Now you got a spread of decoys on a jerk line instead of 1 straight line of decoys

Interested in seeing a picture of this if you have one

I made this today before KF hunter mentioned a square. I made a triangle, going to anchor off one corner, pull off another

... I made mine out of 1/2 inch galvanized steel and drilled through it, used eye bolts through. I ran Paracors through all the conduit so it folds up. Then used big nuts on the para cord so it won’t pull back through once I had the tension I wanted. Then painted it all flat black.

Also I took apart an old fishing stringer, the kind with the metal clips. Ran those through the decoy down to a commercial trolling snap. The kind that come with the nice big stainless swivel... those snap onto the eyes really well.

:chuckle:  Whatever works ya know! I had everything in my garage for the swivels and stuff. I figure this will last forever and it’s way stronger than anything I could buy.

I think this will actually work well, but I ordered a bungee. Lifting up the chain will come up and the spring should draw with it, then when I release the chain and spring should work together to pull back... I hunt the tide flats with big tide swings. So as the tide comes up and chain should lift with the jerk rig from the decoys floating. Then as the tide goes out the chain goes to the bottom too.

Halibut spreaders bungee cord and a sash weight. Put loops on you deals so you can change them out. :twocents:
