No title boats
« on: December 09, 2021, 05:46:04 PM »
So, I have been exercising some bad judgement by looking for a small boat, either aluminum or even an inflatable.  The ones with titles go for about what a new one costs, but the no title boats can be pretty cheap.

It looks like you take the bill of sale, file an application and then get registration but it's not permanent for 3 years?  Sounds like someone can try to claim it was theirs, stolen or whatever.  Sounds like you have registration and can use it those three years.

Anyone go through the process?  I can't seem to find out what it would cost all in for a $500 boat, any guesses?  Anything else to look out for other than roll the dice nobody comes to claim it in 3 years?

I've done this on two or three, it is no big deal and no more expensive than regular registration.

I had to do this once.  An overzealous Mukilteo police officer insisted that I needed to register my old 14’ sailboat if I used a motor on it.  I had to pay “use tax”, apply for a title, there was wait period, don’t remember how long.  Other than that, it was pretty much the same as any other boat.

What length?
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

What length?

Probably about 12'  something I can get in the back of my truck as I can't store a trailer.

I'm intrigued with inflatables due to the storage in the offseason.

I may be wrong, but I don't think a title is required on anything less than 16' as long as it's powered by less than 10hp.  I always thought that was one of the reasons why so many outboards were 9.9's, that and some bodies of water have hp restrictions as well.  I've never had a title or registration for our canoe, or the kayaks.

Every river around here dumps into salt so I'll need title and numbers.
