Calling Turkey during youth season
« on: February 02, 2022, 11:30:07 AM »
Hey all is it to early for calling during youth season?
I’m hoping for my grandson to get to see them coming in all strutting and gobbling

They will respond for sure.  Only problem you’ll more than likely have is then being in large flocks with multiple toms, jakes and hens.  If they aren’t workable, convert ground and find a lone roamer if you can.  He will be a lot easier to work

Hard to say what they will be doing. I find weather is more of a factor than time of year.

I will agree that the most difficult part of the youth season is they are still flocked up and usually still on private ground and not dispersed through public, at least where we usually hunt.  Just finding birds on public to call to is a challenge.

Would it be better to just wait for the regular season?

I agree with all of the above...
Elevation,weather,all that plays a role.
Will they  gobble...yes,will they be down low in the valleys...most likely.
Nobody knows what conditions, and where turkeys will be,or flocked up,durring spring yet.
Too early to know yet.

If you want consistent ability to find birds on public land, my vote would be yes, it is more consistent during regular season.  If you have access to private land, then that changes things.

I wouldn't wait.

You'll have a lot more space to yourself during youth season.

That’s kind of what I was thinking as well

Youth season is a week long this year to.  Agree with everyone on weather dependant. They can be super vocal.

Youth is under 16 ,is that right.
I didn't know youth season is a week this year, that's supper awesome.
Have they came up with dates yet?

Winter is still holding pretty strong ,here in the NE .
So it's a pull of the slot machine at this point ,at what conditions are gonna look like beginning of April.
