Anybody need Shad?
« on: May 07, 2009, 07:20:42 PM »
With any luck, I will be catching Shad next weekend. I don't keep them since I don't use them for bait, but I figured I would offer up if anybody wants some, I will keep the ones I catch. I can keep them on ice and meet up with you either Saturday evening (the 16th) or Sunday (the 17th).

You heading up to the dam or hitting the lower sections?  They should start crossing any day.

How did you do?  I stopped by the dam and didn't see a lot happening.  I asked few people there but none of them appeared to speak english.

there's a web site that shows how many fish go over the Bonneville dam every day. once the shad hit around 30,000 a day the fishing will be good. i don't fish up by the dam (too crowded) try under the power lines. luckily i have a few friends who want all the shad i can catch. if you need more info you can pm me......

You know you could plant a shad under the corn in your garden and i bet it would help it grow.

You can also chunk it up and fill a gallon glass jar and put a plastic bag around the top with a rubber band.  Set that out in the sun until about Sept..  Then carefully seperate the yellowish clear fluid from the grey gunk.  Put that into a glass jar with a good lid and you have some excellent fish oil for bait.

For those who enjoy cooking anything they can catch.  Put the shad in a covered dish after cleaning and scaling.  put onions, garlic, and butter, and lemon in it. Cook at 225 degrees for 5-6 hours.  The bones are suppose to be so soft you don't notice them and the shad is suppose to be good.  Havn't tried it yet. :dunno:
I've slowed down enough in my old age to finally let the game catch up to me
