Not Quick Enough
« on: May 13, 2009, 12:49:17 AM »
Took my dad out tonight for only the second time this spring. He has just been so busy he hasn't been able to get out to try to fill his spring tag so we thought we would give a whirl tonight since both our schedules were open. I ended up taking him to an area where I had seen quite a few bear last year during August and I figured I would give it a try this spring hoping they would still be there. Well, we were just arriving in the area and I look over to my right towards a rocky hillside coming out of a thicket and all a sudden a nice boar was coming down the hillside towards us. The boar and I made eye contact real quick and before I could even yell at my dad, "BEAR" the bear started hauling balls back up the rocky hillside into the thicket. We continued into the area along side a spur road about a few hundred yards in hopes we could cut him off or call him in with a distress call but we had no luck. We did run into a tree along side the spur road in which the bark was torn up so the bear could reach the rich sugar cambium layer. We also found a lot of bear scat on the spur road in which the scat had a lot of hair in it! All in all it was a good time since we did manage to see over 100 elk and about 10 deer.

Nice pics!  I think if I came up on a peel that fresh I'd be looking over my shoulder.

The same thing happen to me today except I was in my truck and this beautiful black monster wanders off as I pull up.  He even stopped to pose in a perfect broadside pose :bash:  I jump out of the truck and load the rifle as quick as I can.  I hoped he would stay at the edge of the woods on the slope since he didn't really run away (More like he just jogged) :bash:  Tried calling him back with a fawn bleat, but nothing.  Waited for a couple of hours too.

I think that if I hadn't stopped to look, he would have never left the area.  He really didn't act that concerned with me.  He even seemed a little curious.  He was a fat booger too!

With that being said; I know exactly how you feel. :chuckle:
