Traditional Bow/Arrow Tuning

This bare shaft method of tuning your bow/arrow setup is real good. Some folks will fine tune with paper after they do this bare shaft method, but IF you can get your bare shafts to group with your fletched shafts at 20-30 yards... Or further... there is no need to tune any further. The Olympians, who shoot recurves, will shoot bare shafts into there fletched groups at 90 meters... THAT is a tuned setup!!! (and a hell of a smooth release!)

Just google NFAA 300 round, Blue face. Or, go to Lancaster Archery...

For a trad guy....230 is a decent score. I shoot 240 with little effort and have shot as high as 279 (trad bow with sights) 263 bare bow... Top trad shooters will average upper 280's..which is unreal....

Intersting link. As for targets - Last year I bought a can of spray paint, 3 straw bales. Then spray painted my target onto the straw bales. I strung a tennis ball down. That's the bullseye. If I want to get trickier I could swing the tennis ball and try to hit the moving target. I usually can't.

You have to be careful using this method…or any method to tune…
I am shooting a 58# bow at about 28 inch draw. I have a bunch of different carbons. I started shooting some Axis (all arrows will be axis that I describe) 500’s… the bow isn’t near center cut, so I figured a weak arrow would be good… So… I have these things full length with a 175 grain tip on them. Anyone in their right mind would KNOW they are too weak… I mean..they are designed for 45-50 pound bows at 28-29” arrow lengths with 125 grain tips…

But…I shot a few fletched ones and a couple bares at 25 yards they all hit the target about the same spot…hmm…       So then, just for kicks…I grab some 400’s, full length… and 175 grain tips… and Whoa…the bares are going way right, dam near missing the target! Showing real weak! But wait…they are way stiffer than the 500’s….??

So then I grab some 400’s that are cut to 28 ½ inches, about 3 inches shorter than the others…which stiffens them a Bunch!

These dudes are flying  like darts at 40 yards with or without fletchings if I use 175 and 200 grain points. If I go to 250’s they are weak!!

So…I grab some full length 340’s with 100 grain brass inserts and dump those 200 grain points on them… They are flying Great and wow… you want to talk about a quiet bow…those heavier arrow can really make a bow efficient and not allow any vibration noise!!

Not sure what the 500’s were doing showing ok, but it was likely some sort of false reading… they are better suited to the lighter bows or those that want to shoot 85-100 grain points!
