Local training help?
« on: May 14, 2009, 10:44:49 AM »
I have a five month old yellow lab and would really love to be able to hunt with him but i really dont know the first thing about training a hunting dog. I mean ive managed to do the simple little stuff with him like sit stay lie down etc but no real retrieving stuff besides like playing fetch in the yard with marginal results ( loves to run off with it) I wanted to know if there is anyone around the lewis thurston or grays harbor area that really knows what theyre doing? Also how much does a trainer usually cost? Anything helps, Thanks

I found the average cost of a trainer is $500-$800 a month, and some require a 3 month minimum (not all).

I my self could not afford the cost of sending myup to a trainer so i read a few different books, purchased some videos to watch and found a trainer to work with me n training my pup. Basically, we met once a week with the pup and he taught and explained to me how and what i need to do. It worked well for me, and i found a new friend in the proccess. The cost per hour will depend on the trainer, mine was very reasonable (in my oppion).

There are a few places down that dirrection, you just have to look. I have seen a few but can not remember the names. do a goggle search, thats what i did.

It would be about an 1hr 15min south of you in Rainier OR, Butch @ Parkdale Kennels is one of the best in our area.  Here is the link to his placehttp://www.parkdalekennels.com/

I have been training with him for almost 10 years now...

We're picking up our 6 mon old black lab male pup from the trainer in Lewis County (Chehalis area) tomorrow.  We've had him at the trainer for 5 wks (it was supposed to be one month but with schedules the pick up worked out to be 5 wks).  The trainer is excellent and he is the pro-trainer for the Whistling Wings Hunting Retreiver Club.  You can either drop your pup off for full-time, in house training as we did, and/or do weekly training with you and your pup when he comes up on Wednesdays to Fall City area. We plan to continue his training on the weekly basis after we get him back.

PM me for additional info if you're interested.

You can call him by name---Andy does a great job with the dogs he trains. He is a guy who really likes dogs. You can tell just by talking with him for a while. (and because his dogs all work happy)

True, on all accounts.  Andy is terrific and our pup is doing great.  We're gonna run him in his first UKC Hunt Test this weekend - should be fun.
