Kimder 1911 in 10MM
«

Like the subject reads, I am thinking about purchasing a 10MM Kimber 1911 (Camp Guard) for the times when we have to go pack out elk and deer. We had an elk stolen by a bear a couple years ago in Idaho and did not have a rifle or sidearm with us. It was an uncomfortable few minutes while we searched the area.
I am also planning a 40 mile river float in Alaska next year and thought that a pistol would be a good idea to supplement the bear spray as the area is typically windy and I wonder how effective the spray is in that wind.
Anyways, what's the thoughts on the Kimber 1911 and the 10MM?
As a side note, I WILL practice with the pistol to become proficient, although I am not now a pistol shot.
Thanks,
Rob.

I love the 1911. I just dont feel you could go wrong there. I'm a .45 guy, not a 10mm. That will have to be your own choice and opinion. As for Grizz bears, well I could think of worse p shooters to have in a confrontation with one, but there are also some bigger ones.

Kimber makes above the normal standard quality in pistols. You can't go wrong with a Kimber.
Springfield Armory and even Glock (cough cough,
) make great 10 MM pistols today.
Shoot a few and see which you prefer

10mm with stout loads is pretty dang good for a pistol choice for bear country.
I've never had a Kimber 1911, but I've shot a couple. Love them. And I'm a Glock guy

My deer last year. That’s what I know about 10MM.

I've got a couple Kimber 1911's. Bought a new stainless II in 10 mm and a used aluminum compact in 45. Both of them shoot great. I just bought a used Raptor in 45 from a guy from Bellevue but will have to wait a couple weeks for the background to clear. I work in Buckley so if you would like to shoot them we can meet after work some day if you want

Great platform in the 1911, don't own a 10mm but a few 45ACP's. I use a Kimber 45 in steel matches it's my iron sights go to weapon. I like a shoulder holster that has two extra mags at my fingertips.

I own both .45 and a 10mm 1911. I love my .45’s but when you shoot a 10mm you know you have some stopping power in your hand. You can’t go wrong with a 10mm in bear country👍👍👍

I’ve been rethinking my stance on the ten millimeter. I used to be very much in love with it and the pistol it came to me in, the Glock. I live and traipse in brown bear country. But when you boil down handgun calibers, brown bear attack stats (weapons carried, wounds incurred, how many shots fired per attack, primary weapon vs sidearm) the general fact remains that the 10 mm barely edges out the 357 magnum and unless you are one cool sob, or you shoot at a bear too far off, those 16 rounds aren’t going to be used up. In a “oh shoot, this is it” situation, you don’t even have time to say out loud the last sentence I just typed.
More bullet weight!, I’ve been corresponding with old timers and the consensus is hovering around the 44 mag and 454

I'll take the heat...
With the 1911 you have less capacity than a Glock, Sig, Springfield..... and less reliability in general than either modern semi autos or revolvers. I'm not sure how adding those together would result it being at the top of my list.
If I had one and it was my only option I would carry it but I wouldn't buy it for personal protection.
I do like the 10mm as a good option for lightweight bear defense.
