That is insane.   Good for the climber to fight as hard as he did.

Did anyone else hear what I think are cub noises in the background?

To me it looked like the guy was scrambling to the summit of a mountain and the bear must have been hanging out up there doing God knows what. Then he ran into it spooking it causing the bear to charge/attack him. To me the sound was the bear panicking because we was stuck on that ledge with no way off and the only way off was to go back up to the guy. You can see the bear pace back and forth and attempt to go back over the summit even.

Japanese black bears are quite different from those in North America, they can be quite aggressive.  (Yes, there was a cub in this video.). Black bears there are involved in a lot of human conflict, mostly in villages, but this is not uncommon when climbing.  We are on the look out for them when climbing, much more so that in the states. Interestingly, there are no black bears on Hokkaido, they only have brown bears, which can be huge, but are not related to grizzly.  Conflict there is not as common (not commonly reported).

Yep, I watched it again and saw the cub twice.

That dude is lucky to be alive.🤯

Looked to me like that bear had the Napoleon complex. Quite a small one and even with cubs nearby I kinda think the guy flipped out. Maybe he's got a man bun or somethin
