Red fox, Cross fox
« on: November 15, 2022, 06:31:47 PM »
Howdy Trappers,
I recently returned from my yearly fall Idaho wolf line. A highlight for me was the Fox I caught. Although I have caught red fox in Nevada, and Idaho, they are still a novelty to me. I have always hoped to catch a Cross fox.
I run my wolf traps with a pretty stiff pan tension. I don’t want anything tripping my trap, other than a wolf. A fox could do jumping jacks on the pan and not spring the trap. Same for most coyotes.
But the light footed little thieves will scratch at a trap exposing part of it, then steal the lure or bait.
So I put up with these shenanigans for a month til I figured the foxes had grown some fur. Then I set a few sets with smaller fox traps where they had been pestering me.
Caught several fox and a coyote in them. Two of the fox where Cross! Being a fur man I’m bout as happy with them as I am with a wolf.

Very cool. Saw a fox with a lot of grey and black in unit 29 this year.

Fox are so cool, what is their main food source? Not sure I could kill one, not against those that do, just cool animals.
“In common with”..... not so much!!
