My Grandpa’s 1938 Bench Leg Buck. Updated Pics.
« on: November 26, 2022, 07:34:05 AM »
As a kid I stared at this on his wall envisioning that I was hunting and I snuck up on him and got him many times over.

As grandpa aged and I became an adult on visits to him I always thought about having it when he was gone.

That day came many years ago (he lived to be 95) when I was in the Navy and away, him and grandma didn’t believe in funerals so they never had one, cremation was their choice, and being spread on the of homestead on Burdoin mountain.

Well this weekend I find myself at my dad’s sisters funeral. So we are staying in Goldendale Wa and visiting my uncle last night I asked him what ever happened to the antlers that grandpa had on the wall. He said I have them in the shed. Do you want them, I couldn’t believe my ears, I teared up a little and said I would love them and I always dreamed of having them on my wall.

So after some conversation we went out and got them.out of the shed, I still couldn’t believe I was going to be able to see them every day at my house from now one, and I finally got hold them on my hands after all these years.

The buck was shot east of Whitesalmon Wa on Burdoin mountain but ran down going east and when grandpa caught up with him he was standing on the clips above Look lake.

As grandpa told the story the buck had just given up and stood there looking at him because he had went so far but couldn’t go anymore just giving up the chase till he got the kill shot.

I had mentioned this set of antlers on the forum years ago on a thread but couldn’t find it last night, I thought it was on the five point thread, but it wasn’t.

Having my grandpa’s antlers is better than any buck I could ever shoot.

Hers a few pics, I’ll get better ones after I get back home.

That's awesome. You should write the story up on a piece of paper and attach it to the back of the plaque. That way where ever it goes there's always the real story that goes along with it. Congrats on bringing it home.

It’s a 6x7, and has more points but aren’t an inch long the eye guards are easily 4 inches long, and these pics don’t show the mass it has. I’m guessing 26-28 inches wide.

I’m going to get it scored at the sportsman show just for heck of it. But the score is meaningless to me.

That's awesome. I also have a set of Yukon moose antlers from my late gradpa hanging on my family's wall. I was young  at my grandpa's house seeing those horns in his rafters of his garage wanting so badly to touch and look at them. When he passed I was blessed and got them offered to me.  My grandpa also had a grayback buck rack on his wall that he killed  in 1958 that is one of the biggest klickatat bucks I have ever seen 31 wide and 26 in tall 3 point. My aunt has them.  So glad you git those horns I know how much they mean to you.

Nice story and cool antlers. I'm sorry about your great aunt.

No need, it has already been scored as “priceless” could not think of a better trophy to have on the wall!

Very cool story and a beautiful mount! I had a similar desire for one of my grandpa's mounts. But one family member decided they needed everything of his, and being the estate executor, that's exactly what happened. They didn't get my memories though. So glad you ended up with them! Definitely put the story on the back of the plaque so it always stays with the mount, and thanks for sharing your story!

Definitely a conversation piece.  I love those oddballs.  I wanted some of my dad's old horns and just found out my sister took all of them and sold them without telling anyone.

Very cool and great story to go along with them. I've got my dad's biggest buck 3X3 and my grandmothers big 2X2 she harvested in Colorado in 1910.
