I’m gonna be tagging along with a couple buddies this October in 36B who have deer tags. I’m going to snag a bear and wolf tag just in case but we are curious if anyone has info on the water situation up in the high country in that area, if it’s normal to have seeps and springs or if they’re gonna be all dried up in October? Hoping to go in light with filters and not have pack in a bunch of water but would hate to get caught with our pants down. Going to make a couple scout trips this summer to check it out, just wanna be as prepped as we can be heading in so we can make the most of our trips. If anyone wants to PM I can get more specific about the areas we are planning on hitting and checking out.

The times I have hunted the general area, seeps and springs were very common and wouldn't worry about water but depending on exactly where you go, it could be different.

That’s good to know. It looks like some sweet country up there, I’m excited to check it out. Hopefully we can get some better weather in early October this year

This has been my experience as well. With some actual boots on the ground scouting I think you will have no problem with water. Like anywhere there will definitely be some spots that are completely dry

You never know until you get up there that time of year.  You can pretty much trust topo maps that show springs, most of them are reliable.  I wouldn't trust a spring for an October trip if it isn't on a map.  The problem with that country is it may show a spring just off the trail but it is so steep it can be a heck of a hike to get down (and back up) to it.  The most reliable way is to find out if horses are using it or if horses (guides) are riding in, they know where the reliable water is.  On top of those ridges the water certainly can be hard to find.  My suggestion is to fill up before you make the ascent so you at least have one day of water, you may be coming down the next if you don't find it, just how it is up there.

Year before last was a very dry year down there and I didn’t have a problem finding water through the the summer and fall unless I was in the sagebrush.

Thanks all! Burned myself last year relying on satellite images and my buddy and I got in quite the pickle without water there for a bit lol I’ll definitely focus on the topo maps for water this time

Challis is a really cool area. Hiking in the Frank Church is pretty awesome and there are tons of deer in the burns

Bucks in the burns get me fired up, hopefully we can turn up something decent. Maybe get lucky and stumble on a bear as well. Can’t wait to get up there and poke around
