Hardware for elk euro mount?
«
on:
February 19, 2023, 02:15:46 PM »
I did a euro mount for my elk this year and I am mounting it on a large cedar round that I finished off. I'm trying to figure out the best way to mount the cedar round securely to my wall and am looking for suggestions. The skull will be attached to the cedar round with a skull hooker, so that part is taken care of.
The spot I'm putting the mount is such that I could use two studs (16" apart) or just one stud, it doesn't have to be centered over either way. The cedar round is 21" wide, so it could cover the 16" spread ok. Pics are below.
This bull's rack was full of cedar shards and still smells a bit like the cedars he was rubbing, I'm excited for the whole thing to come together.

Attach a braided wire to to the back in two places near the edges of the round - leave it slack and then use one or two screws in the stud(s) to hold the wire. The slack in the wire will let you adjust it for level and centering

Awesome bull. Good job on the euro
Check out these noose hangers. I think taxidermists use them on shoulder mounts. Leave them in one piece for mounting on one stud or break them in half to use it to mount on 2 studs. I think there's a video on YouTube showing how to use them if that's what your looking for.

I like clean so counter screw n plug, french cleat like dreadi said, or just find level for you on backside (how you desire it to hang off wall) ~16inch apart and route in/jig in cuts/holes/slots @ ~45 degree angle, deep enough for screwheads that you center on stud(s) put in at ~angle used, that way it is clean on front still. Sorry, hope this makes sense.

With how thick that slab is, I'm a fan of cutting in keyhole hangers if you have the router and bits to do it

There's hangers like this from taxidermy supply stores, this one is from McKenzie. You drill the hole in the back of your board (or form) and the hangers sits inside the hole while the outside of the hangers pretty much sits flush on the back. They work slick, I use them all the time. They'll hold a shoulder mount moose on a wall so it should hold your wood round. Instead of using a hole saw, use the appropriate spade bit.

Used a slab chunk of a maple burl for my base. Inset a steel bar and welded a rod to it. Heated it up in my dads forge and bent it around until I liked how it held my elk. Fun, fairly easy project. I’m happy how it turned out.

On the wall. Guess I will add, I used 3” screws behind the plate to catch a stud. 3” screws also attach the steel plate.
