First Pheasant Hunt
« on: February 23, 2023, 09:19:31 PM »
One of my friends is a member of Cooke Canyon Hunting Club and he invited me out last for a hunt last weekend. He even picked me up :)

For him, the most important part was training his girl Roxy. So if he didn’t get to shoot, no big deal. He gave me the run down on how it works while on the way there. After we arrived the the club, which was nice and had puppies, we got in the field. The staff got to us and got the birds released, then off we went.

The winds were gusting in the high 30’s.
The first bird was picked up by Roxy before he could fly away. He got the bird and released it again but, neither of us got a shot on it since it got into wind and took off and landed elsewhere.

Eventually Roxy found a couple more birds for us and he got a shot on a hen.  He also got a shot on a rooster too. Roxy found a dead hen maybe from the day before. That wind was kicking my butt and my finger tips were super cold for a good while. I missed a couple birds. Eventually I figured that Roxy would find us another bird and perhaps I should trail farther behind in the wind so I could pick up a shot with more time.

Roxy picked up a scent and flushed a rooster. I was behind far enough to get a lead on it from about 60 yards, and dropped a rooster!

Roxy was a good girl and brought her right over to me. We covered almost three miles on the hunt.

Sounds like a good day except for the weather.
Did a little bit of pheasant hunting when living in upstate NY where I was born and raised.
A lot harder to hit than it looks like, just like quail.
