Wouldn’t ya know it….  Got this nice Kudu not long after an extremely, extremely too close encounter stalking Cape buffalo in thick coverage.  Even with a 416, I felt like the hunted.

Holy smokes what a beautiful animal!

Finally back to Lusaka after 10 days of hunting.  All I can say is WOW.  Africa didnt disappoint, and these animals are TOUGH!!  The Buffalo would have probably expired after one shot, but I put two more in him when he tried to stand up.  The buffalo hunt was tougher than expected, as they had lots of rain and the grass was high.  I got a nice representative Buffalo with good bosses, but he wasn’t the 40” Buffalo I was hoping for.  With that said, 38” is pretty respectable, and I passed on a monster 43-44” Buffalo that still had soft bosses.  Being 50-80 yards from a herd of 400+ Buffalo, and not being able to see them was a rush.  I will go back some day.

If you go, take tough bullets.  Most of these animals are easily as tough as our elk.  I shot the zebra at about 100 yards perfectly broadside, and the 200gr Accubond didn’t reach the opposite skin.  I only made 1 suspect shot, and that was the waterbuck that took a step as I was squeezing the trigger.  Hit him about 1ft back of the shoulder, just barely getting the lungs.  I wasn’t even sure I had hit him. That bullet passed through, and so did the Puku, which is maybe just a little bigger than our pronghorn.  The Buffalo took 3 400gr TSX’s from a 416 Rigby.   This is what the Kudu did to my Accubond at 160 yards.

As soon as I get home, Ill start saving for another trip. I still want a BIG Buffalo, but also a warthog (saw a monster, but he never stopped running) and a sable.  The concession we ended up hunting isn’t the one we signed up for.  Many of Zambias concessions are a mess right now, and tied up in court.  Hopefully that gets straightened out sooner than later.   But you’re right, Africa, and especially wild Africa, hooks a person.

We had a similar problem in Zim-they took our PH'S  consession and awarded it to a black "farmer" with no warning - breaking the lease they had.

My advise to new African hunters is to learn to roll with things.  Africa rolls along at its own pace and direction.   Trying to control it only leads to frustration.   Roll with it and it might be different than what you had planned but if you have a good PH it will still be spectacular.

It would be interesting to weigh that bullet, see how much of the 400 gr. it retained. It expanded nicely though.

That is the 200gr Accubond from the 300wsm.  The 400gr TSX’s expand with boring regularity from the 416.  Those TSX’s are designed to open at slower speeds than normal TSX’s, and they do it well.  They .416 is a beast as well.  I drove the 2nd shot from about 3/4 of the way back through the lungs because he fell quartering hard away.  Here’s the bullet, and here’s the channel from what looks like a gut shot, but was heading hard forward.
