Bears in Marckworth Forest?
« on: August 06, 2023, 07:51:03 AM »
Hi,

I went bear hunting for the first time yesterday. I went to Marckworth and I saw some sign, 5 separate piles of scat, the only thing is that it was all old and dry. I'm wondering if the bears have possibly moved onto higher elevation at this point? I saw berries, but quite a few of the thickets are under a canopy and haven't ripened due to lack of sunlight.

I was listening to the *censored* podcast about bear tactics and they suggested that hunts should be aimed at ~3k feet of elevation on season opener. The area I was hunting is all at or under ~1k feet.

Do you think the lack of fresh sign and low berry yield is a good reason to focus the rest of my hunts somewhere other than Marckworth? I was specifically targeting Marckworth due to it's proximity to my home.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If there is no feed available to the bears, they won’t be there.  With that said, there are definitely plenty of bears in that area. Find the feed, find the bears.

I went out again last night and saw a bear carcass someone left on the side of the road, so they are there.

I went out again last night and sat on a big patch of berries I found, didn’t see or hear anything. I even found two trail cams in the area, so I’m not the only person who thought it showed promise.
