Westside elk in warm weather
« on: September 11, 2023, 01:15:12 PM »
I had planned on heading over to the westside tomorrow after work to hunt through the weekend. The forecast is showing low to mid 80's Thursday-Saturday which sounds more like Wenatchee weather than westside weather. I have very little experience with Roosevelt as far as what they do when its warm but I assume its the same as RM in that they try to find cool areas for the majority of the day. What say you guys?

Yes
Elk are elk and do the same things either side
Find wallows and wet spots
Acess is usually the hardest part
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I did come over and hunted 3 days. We put on a good amount of miles and didn't hear anything talking. Ended up seeing a few elk but no tags filled

I did 6 days in 516 and only heard one bugle all week. Hot and Dry weather was tough.  Definitely not what I expected my first west side hunt to be like.

Was in Toutle GMU chasing deer this weekend.  Not a single bugle.  Saw elk... but they were quiet. 84 degrees at 1:00 on Sunday
Introduce someone new to hunting this year.

I’ve got the Quality rifle  tag for 516 which opens next Monday. Will be hunting around Packwood. Were  you hunting near there?

Have not heard any bugles, but have seen elk every day.
Did have one scream at me, and 2 that only chuckled.
Had one come in silent (only bull I actually saw)
All were in creek bottoms.
Saw several cows, but I played "spot and spook"

I did see a good bull on top of a Subaru yesterday, so somebody got it done in the dry and crunchy.

Westside + warm weather........I was with a buddy in September last year and we packed up the elk in a tarp and stuffed about a half dozen bags of ice into the carcass and raced off to the butcher. He made a stop and readjusted after finding some warmth getting into the package from muffler and exhaust pipes.
