Blacktails still rutting?
« on: December 26, 2023, 03:10:09 PM »
I've had 3 pics now in the last 2 weeks of bucks with their heads together,  and each time does were in the area.  Last night 3 bucks at one time were going at it. Would they still be fighting over the does at time of year?

We had a blacktail buck grunting and chasing a doe all around us on December 31st a few years back while we were archery hunting. Never could get him to stop to give us a shot. Lol

They spar and act stupid even when not in the rut but, they'll breed anytime.

If there is a doe that needs breeding, a buck doesn't care what time of year it is. Saw a doe that was unbred or didn't take just last week and a 4 point muley was dipping his wick. Does won't let a buck mount them if they aren't ready.

In more temperate and more gradual photoperiod environments, the deer breed throughout the course of months and not in a fast/furious week or two. Here though, I think it's most likely yearling does or does that missed a dose last month.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

They'll breed any month, It's just a doe that hit a 2nd or 3rd cycle more than likely

Sometimes yearling does will hit sexual maturity and come into their first heat very late in the “typical” breeding season
Go hawks
