It probably is a good thing as it accumulates data to support the management of bobcats. Without that data DFW opens themselves up to being accused of not having data to support seasons and possibly closing the season. This is what happened in California.I am trying to get them to go for just taking a tooth instead of the entire jaw.
I would think the best data in the world would be the CITES tag data that’s been collected nationwide for, I don’t know, 45 years? Although the only age class info in that data would be adult, or yoy. That should be plenty. That being said. Bobcat jaw collection is a good source of proactive data collection. I say a good scientific approach to justify harvest. Although, I think it’s too little too late.Idaho has collected jaws for 5 years +-. I beleive their collection is over now. It was voluntary, and IDFW reimbursed the producer $5 for the jaw.I’m surprised that WDFW is even spending time and money supporting furbearer harvest with a real study.Too bad they didn’t study the possible effects on Marten, Lynx, Cascade fox, and Bobcat before they dumped their Fisher out on everybody.
