Re-homing WPG
« on: March 12, 2024, 08:18:39 PM »
Archer is a 7 year old wirehaired pointing griffon. He’s a great hunting dog and an affectionate pet- but unfortunately he bit our nephew (not seriously) and has shown aggression to kids a couple other times. We have a young son and a lot of kids around, and would feel better if he were in a home with no kids.  We also moved from our house in the country with twice daily off-leash walks, to the suburbs with daily leashed walks, and he has struggled with the adjustment.  We are torn up about rehoming him, but want to find a home where he can get the daily activity and attention he needs and not need to be kenneled due to kids being around all the time.

In the field, Archer is mainly an upland dog. He’s a reliable pointer and steady to flush. I never feel like I’m competing with him for the bird or pulling him back. I can go all day without yelling any commands- he'll just range at a distance he can see me every little bit and follow my walking direction. If he finds birds, he'll lock up and wait. If he goes over a ridge and doesn't come back in a couple minutes, I just start hiking over there expecting to find him on point. And he’ll hunt for anyone- I’ve loaned him to friends when I can’t go and he hunts great for them. He’s super high-octane and has a ton of endurance. He keeps working for long into the hunt when my buddy’s pointers start getting lazy.

I don't duck hunt, but I take him jump shooting the ponds for geese. He loves water retrieves and I think he’d make a good waterfowl dog too.

His ideal owner would be an avid hunter with the time to provide exercise and stimulation, but also looking for a pet. Griffs in general don't do great left in a kennel and Archer was raised indoors with people and does not like to be left alone outside. He wants to be wherever you are.  Please send this around to help us find the right person or reach out if you think he could be a good fit for you. I'd be happy to talk on the phone to give all the details.

We'd ask for a donation in lieu of a rehoming fee or something to show some skin in the game. It’s important to us that we find the right home for him.

I would suggest you contact Pat Nordquest (sp?) with gundogzresque.org he started a non-profit just for rehoming of hunting dogs to hunting homes. At a minimum he could be a resource for you.
