Charging Backup 12V Battery
« on: March 15, 2024, 08:00:57 PM »
Planning a solo road/camping/hiking trip to the Sawtooth’s this summer. I use an RV battery to power my CPAP. I was wondering if there is a device to plug into my 7way trailer plug to either power the battery and for charging it. Will be sleeping in my canopy and traveling light.

Thanks

What I did was make my own adapter. Purchase a trailer side 7-way plug run 10ga wire from pin #1 (ground) then another from pin #2 (12V) then add some alligator clips to attach to the battery. Just make sure you color code the wire and or clips.

That's cool and super easy to charge your battery.
So then you've got a charged 12V battery and a CPAP machine.
Do you need an inverter of some kind?
What do you use?

It's possible you don't need an inverter, quite a few of the cpap machines will run off a 12v battery. A 12v cord/adapter can be found on amazon or various online cpap stores. I use a 12v cig plug in my camper.

I figured that I could power a 12V battery thru my 7-way. Just wasn’t sure this would charge my battery?

FYI. I do use an inverter hooked to said battery with my CPAP plugged into that. Lasts a good 5-6 days.

I have a travel cpap. Battery lasts 2 nights. I run the Honda generator about 2 hours and it charges it enough for 2 days. I imagine a solar panel /inverter would maintain it with decent conditions. It was about $1000.
