I have archery hunted for years and am going to muzzle load deer this year. What is a good muzzle loader for a first timer? I really don't want to spend a ton of money, but also don't want to buy a piece of junk. What muzzle loader is going to give me the most bang for my buck?? No pun intended.

I don't know about hands down ... I've shot it and the Wolverine but I have also shot a couple of TC's and I own two TC's. To answer the question asked not what muzzleloader YOU like I would have to say stick with something that is name brand and has recognition. That being said the most popular out there for a beginner is either TC or Knight.

There is another thread on hear about the Knight's being discounted on Gunbroker, because everyone is unloading them since they filed bankruptcy last month.

I have a discontinued remington and I ordered a bunch of extra parts, so that when the parts are discontinued, I will still have a bunch of extra parts should I need them. breech plugs, nipples, etc.

The Bighorn is a very good rifle, very accurate, light easy to shoot. But it is a real pain to clean. Removing the breech plug after more than a few shots requires a vise, the special breech tool, a hammer and good stout piece of steel to turn the breech tool with. Once it’s out you will need to work the bolt, breech plug, nipple, and all the threads with a tooth brush, soap and water; lots of nooks and crannies to clean before reassembling.

CP - I had the same problem with my remington and getting the breech plug, but I started putting some anti-sieze breech plug stuff that TC made, and it improved the ability to turn the breech plug without a vise.

any muzz is tough to take the breech plug out if you don't use the anti-sieze grease. I use a knight predator and don't have problems (anymore

For a recomendation, what do you want? A modern or traditional?

This stuff? I use the Knight grease and it doesn't work too well.

All great advice. I really don't care if it is traditional or modern. I want the best bang for my buck and an accurate/realiable muzzle loader. I have read alot about peep sights and think that is the way to go, so probably a model that will take an aftermarket peep.

I use Knight lube and always loosen mine by hand with the wrench. You have to use it liberally.

Then your probably looking at a modern style. I use a williams peep with good results. There are a bunch of different styles to choose from.

My cousin has one. I'm not going to bad mouth anyone here but if you want to know what he's been dealing with shoot me a pm.

As for a new gun. If you can find a TC Black Diamond XR in stainless. Buy it. You can still find new Knight Bighorns in the stores. There's even been a few places that have had them on a Father's day sale.

Thought I saw the new "Wholesale Sports" had them on sale. Thumbhole stock to boot.

On sale through this weekend. They are the black thumbhole stock, blue barrel finish.
