Youth Yakima Central (Bumping, Nile, Bethel)
« on: October 29, 2024, 01:12:59 PM »
Hello all, my 12 year old son has never shot an elk and he got drawn for a cow tag. Only unit I’ve spent anytime in is Bethel and that was 25 years ago. We aren’t going until general ends so I figure now would be a good time to post as people are getting out of the woods. He and I hunt hard so willing to hike. We just got back from Idaho or I would have been doing more research than I have. Thank you all for any info.

Get in that thick stuff off the roads behind boulder cave. Always see elk in there. Best of luck!

Thank you. I’m sure we can find a cow after everyone gets outta the woods but his mom wants him back in school ASAP

Top end of and just west of cougar canyon above oak creek.  Go in through the feed pens take that road up till it is pretty level and you start getting into trees. Hunt to the north.  Should be cows in there.  That place gets hammered but should have cows after general as migration will start.  Plus the fire to the west will push them over here as this still has feed and did not burn.

Thank you DeerThug. Seems like a solid plan. I’m hoping that with the exodus of hunters from the woods and some weather, the elk should start staging around the feeding area. I’ve noticed that to be the case in other areas even without major weather events. -It’s a huge hunting unit but figure best off to write off 90% of the marginal areas and hit the 10% of traditional pre-winter staging areas. We are looking for one cow, not a 400” bull so hopefully able to pull it off. Hopefully I’ll post a success pic!

Don't even have to drive that far . Once on top hang a right and drive down into cougar canyon.  Walk all the little draws the cows are in there .
