With basically 2 mediocre units they can hunt in, there wasn’t much hope for big money.

That still seems like a steal, what 2 units are they limited too?

True, it's not what it was, but there are still good goats in Naches that I know of.

This is still a 4 month hunting opportunity for a animal most will never get a chance to hunt.... $17k was a deal

Link to all auction tag proceeds, goat is to the far right on the chart. It sold for less than it has in any of the past ten years.

You can hunt goats in Alaska with a guide for about the same cost. Unless someone knew of a really nice goat that they wanted to harvest I don’t see this tag having much value.

If you’re a super busy business owner with a bunch of extra $$ in your pocket who doesn’t have a lot of time to get out of town for 2-3 weeks for an AK hunt but you have a lot of weekends and a few long weekends and want to hunt goats with hair, it has value. It’s tough to hunt long haired goats in Alaska due to snow.

You can also hunt better mule deer for about half of what those tags usually go for, not sure that’s the point

Hunting your home state on you schedule is why these tags are popular in my opinion.

I hunt goats in AK and if anything I'd say the place to shoot an easy long haired goat is Kodiak. Have you seen a difference between goats killed later in AK compared to other states?

I can see your point that a local who wants to do the hunt DIY might be willing to pay this much instead of going to Alaska with a guide.

For deer or elk though I think our state does hold some very large animals that can be as good as any state if you have access to the land they are on and have a 4 month season to go after them. I wouldn’t pay what some people pay for those tags but I completely understand why some people do.

Forgot about Kodiak.
