Pyrodex vs. Triple 7
« on: June 28, 2009, 08:26:06 AM »
For those of you that have used them, what is your preference and why?  Also....do you see a difference in regular Pyrodex vs. Pyrodex Select....and is the Select closer to Triple 7 in ballistics?

I have used both. I prefer 777 loose. Seems to be cleaner than Pyrodex powder. :twocents:

Thanks Adna....was starting to think I wasn't going to get a response.  Is it also correct you use 15% less by volume of Triple 7....i.e 100 grains of Black powder or Pyrodex...one would use 85 grains of Triple7 for an equivalent load?

I shoot 310 grain Knight lead bullets. They seem to shoot best with 90 grains of 777 loose powder. I find that more than 90 grains of powder only seems to create more smoke, not better accuracy. Thats just my opinion though.
I also shoot with musket caps. No particular reason, just what I have always used.

I shoot 295gr Powerbelts with two 50gr Pyrodex pellets and musket caps.  That is the most accurate load out of my 50cal Knight.

I "think, may be wrong" that this is only and issue if you changing the size of powder.  FG vs FFFG... they smaller size will actually be a bigger load by iin the same volume.  Is that what you're thinking of maybe???  :dunno:

Good point. I shoot 90 grains of ffg. Pressure differences are when using fffg.
Hope this helps.

No.....Definitely referring to FFG, not FFFG in regards to a comparable amount by volume to Pyrodex or black powder.  Good point to bring up though.

I use 777 loose lot cleaner and slightly more accurate than the pellets. :twocents:

777 pellets. cleaner and they touch off faster in my gun. my girlfriends muzzleloader likes the pyrodex more. Depends on the gun.

What type of ML do you have.  I 've been thinking of trying 777 because Shockey's gold has horrible groups in my gun.  With a musket cap do you have any ignition issues?
