The Conservation Coalition is pleased to provide a positive update on our amicus brief in support of the Sportsmen’s Alliance PRA lawsuit against WDFW.

In our previous post, we shared that the Washington Attorney General’s Office had objected to our filing—not because of the documents and evidence we provided, but because of whether the perspective of our organization should be considered. In response, our legal team filed a reply explaining why our input is both relevant and necessary to hold WDFW accountable.

Our response emphasized that public records requests that remain “open” indefinitely—without formal closure—effectively prevent the public from seeking accountability. The Washington Supreme Court has granted our motion to file the Conservation Coalition of Washington’s amicus memorandum in support of the appeal being sought by the Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation. This means the Court will consider our documents, allowing our arguments to be part of the record as it decides whether to take up the SAF appeal.

WDFW now has until October 23 to respond to our memorandum. We won’t have a right of reply to a potential response, but we’re confident in the strength of our position and the evidence submitted, and we believe the Supreme Court Justices will understand why this appeal is so necessary to ensure an uncorrupted PRA process within not only WDFW and the Commission, but other Washington State agencies as well.

Sportsmen’s Alliance and the Conservation Coalition will continue to keep you informed as the case moves forward. Thank you to everyone standing with us to defend open government and responsible conservation in Washington

Anti-hunters are coming for all of your opportunities.

As we posted on Monday, the preservationist group Washington Wildlife First has launched a new campaign called “Not My WDFW.” They are not only demanding the removal of WDFW Director Kelly Susewind, but calling for a total overhaul of the agency’s approach to wildlife management.

If you dig into their own materials, and it’s clear this is an all-out push to dismantle Washington’s hunting and science-based management traditions.
In this new campaign and in their recent lettered response to WDFW’s  2025 Draft Game Management Plan, they target nearly every aspect of modern wildlife management:
 • Predator hunting and management of wolves, cougars, and bears
 • Pheasant release programs and small-game opportunities
 • Trapping and furbearer management
 • Mountain goat and bighorn sheep hunting
 • Salmon and trout programs and Hatcheries
 • Even moose, deer, and elk management

This campaign isn’t just about one director. It’s a coordinated effort to pressure state government officials and elected representatives into reshaping WDFW and pushing away from the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. If they succeed, Washington’s hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage  (along with the conservation funding it provides) will be at risk.

Hunters, anglers, and trappers need to pay attention. Please join us at the November 14-15 WDFW Commission meeting in Lynnwood to push back on extremist organizations that cosplay as moderate, common sense groups that represent all Washingtonians.  This group had much influence on the previous administration and the current commission, and even credits themselves for the losses of your opportunities like spring bear and major reductions to cougar management. Sportsmen must match the effort and engagement level of anti-hunters, not letting the small minority individuals dictate the opportunities of our community.
