The first Moose tags.
« on: December 04, 2025, 10:01:18 AM »
Just curious if there are any folks on here that had one of the early moose tags and from the beginning when Washington started the permit drawing and their stories.
I was fortunate to draw one in 1993. I was 25 years old. In those days you had send in $150.00 with a return refund if not drawn. (Still wish it was that way)
I remember saving aluminum cans to afford the entry fee. Ha!
I drew the Mt Spokane unit. It sure has changed since I drew that tag. I enjoy reading the OIL stories.
My dad was with me (since passed) I had my bull located from scouting and was done at 7:00am opening morning.

Well that sucks!! Was that a Selkirk or Mt Spokane moose? I can’t remember between the two which offered the first tag. Did he at at least get pics?
It would be cool to see the first moose tag notched in Washington.

I think it was, I believe it was 1 permit and I thought it was 1990. That was a long time ago so my brain might be a bit off.

I will try. All I have is hard copies. I have a video of the hunt my dad took. The old VHS that sat on top of his shoulder. How times have changed.
Regardless it’s a joy to read the OIL tag stories. Would love to hear the story of the first moose tag notched in Washington.

I have a lot of photos like that from the 80s and 90s.  I take a picture of them with my cell phone if I want to post one.  Usually takes me two or three tries to get one without glare on it.   :chuckle:

The first moose permits were issued in Washington in 1977 in which 3 tags were issued in the Selkirk unit. That's been nearly 50 years ago now.

We have a small Shiras moose rack that my late grandpa killed sometime while my dad was in Vietnam. He never remembers hearin the story, or at least everything he had going on during the war pushed it out of his mind if he did, and my aunt who is the only one young enough to still be home remembers them going on a deer hunting trip that she thought was in eastern Washington
and coming back with lots of animals, including the moose. We always assume somehow he had got a Washington moose tag, but maybe they went up into Canada?

Back in those days I'll bet you could hop in your truck with your rifle, drive across the border and buy a moose tag over the counter.
