Bugleing Roosevelt elk

The roosevelts respond well to a bugle if your not in an area that has been over pressured.  Usually the second week of archery they are really talking.  We tent camped it last year and they were talking all night under the full moon.  We were able to buggle and locate one at first light as he blew back at us.  We located the bull and coaxed him in with multiple hoochie mama calls.  He came right in.  One arrow to boiler put him down.

   Get in real tight, that's worked best for me.  Our Roosevelts here in SW corner on coast are exceptionally fickle critters though.  What works on one seems to scare the next-door bull away.

I've hunted the high country of the William O. With little wimpy bugles, I'd get a responce but the big boys wouldn't come in, just talk back. When I got big and bad I would call in nice 6x6's and 7x7's, took some good pictures, played with a bull for 2 hours until the wind changed and I could go in on him. He was a 5x5, through my bugled off two the side and back behind me, he walked by at 20 yds, all by himself, no cows, no spikes. I've called in a lot of bulls that i could have killed, but never could draw a big bull tag. I work the bull how he wants to be worked.

Try using a whistle, PS OLt company made one years ago.  I've seen plans for homemade version.  Sounds like a pushy spike.  I've had great luck when everyone else has said the elk are quiet.

I had the Matheny early bull permit last Oct. Great hunt with alot of action.
The bulls would bugle back, but they wouldn't leave the herd unprotected.

I got a nice 5x6 pissed off enough to get within 10 yds of my partner and I.
It was on the opener, and I passed for a opportunity for a bigger  bull.

I ended up shooting a small 5 pt on day 8.
