Backyard Bobcat Bait
« on: April 13, 2026, 06:36:03 AM »
Hey guys very new to trapping cats but just wanted to share a little success I had this year.

I’ve been after the sight of a down door and two big ol eyeballs staring back at me for the past couple of years now. Where I trap is where I have gotten several cats on camera so I knew they were in the area. I  tried all the lures, feathers and flagging but nothing seemed to work for me, trying to keep up with the PNW rain was a challenge to keep scents fresh. Seeing the guys down south accumulate cat scat when they stumbled across it to use on their sets made me want to try it too. In the process of gathering cat poop while scouting I couldn’t help but notice they all had little squirrels claws in there scat. So I light bulb went off and thought man I have squirrels running around all over the place back at home. So this 2025 summer I stacked up a couple backyard skinned greys in the freezer and used them this fall for bait and behold success!!! I was able to get my first bobcat which was a 25 pound Tom and the second was a 22 pound female. I ended up missing a third cause a dang elk knocked my door down. I hope this helps anybody looking for “convenient” year around cat bait. It sure turned things around for me :)

I’ll try to get some pictures up here in a minute.

Congratulations! You earned them. Way to stick with it. Impressive to me you, as a novice, came up with a key step in efficient trapping. Especially cat trapping. Bait procurement, bait making/preperation, and lure making is a year around task. Next fall a lot of guys will have to trap a beaver for bait before they can set a cat cage. You’ll be cat trapping from the get-go.

Eastern Grey Squirrels, I just rip the hides off of them before freezing.
Thank you for having me clarify.

Are you taking the hides off for other use or do you think that adds to the attraction/scent draw?
It is better to be consistently incorrect than inconsistently correct...

Just for a scent booster, it made scents in my head to take the hide off, but have no real data to back it up, I did have a cage with a hide on squirrel just cause I was to lazy to skin it the night before and needed to set the following morning and no luck on it.
As far as the hides go I just practice fur handling with them and pin them up in the garage.

Put those Eastern Greys up on a female mink board. They always sell at trapper sales.
