Female Lion Poached
« on: December 04, 2007, 10:21:14 AM »
One of the 15 females for Stevens/Pend Oreille quota was poached this weekend and seized by Fish and Game.   >:(  We're down to 8 females or 21 total cats left before the harvest is closed.  They took 3 females and 3 males this weekend.

Thats no good, how do you mean it was poached?  Guy had no tag or shot it in the lights or something?
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

A friend of mine was running his hounds when the Game Warden stopped him to check tags and permits.  He had a female lion in the back of his truck he'd just confiscated from someone who did not know the season was open only for permit holders.  I believe (not 100% sure) but it sounded like a chance killing and the guy might have even been checking it in when he got the bad news and had the cat confiscated.  I'll try to find out more details and let you know.

yes...but it's so many females first, then so many lions in the end. if the limit is 20 cats, but 5 females, as soon as the 5th female is killed, it becomes pursuit only as i understand it regardless of how many males are left till the quota is met.
i pulled those numbers out of my ass, but you get the idea. machias, if i'm wrong, please correct me.

Actually you are mostly right on the money :)  The five counties doing the hound permits is the only ones under the quota system.  The rest of the state is open to lion hunting till 15 March.

Thanks for the info Machias.  Too bad the guy got lucky with a chance killing and then found out the season was closed and open only to permit hunters.  Also too bad it removed one from the quota for the special season.

Yea it's a sad situation all around, now there's a beautiful animal that won't be displayed properly as well.  I'll find out the details and let everyone know what I find out.

Sounds like the guy made a mistake...a costly mistake. The rules are hard to figure out sometimes, but it is our job to learn them.
