Ive never had them out of a river but we always catch a ton in salt water and clean and ice them on the boat and i think theyre fine

The problem is that the nets are literally within 50 yards or less of the hatchery and in a creek that couldn't move a bale of hay if it wanted to.  The hatchery workers were standing on the bulkhead watching the Skoks work their nets right in front of them.

The ones I've had smoked were as good as any smoked salmon I thought - just a lot smaller.  I'd be awful tempted to bleed and gut them when caught and stuff them in champagne ice, before I'd write them off.  Never fished for them, though, suspect they need a lot more care to be palatable.

I have smoked humpies, and canned them for sandwich spread, they are good that way.  They do not last long in the freezer though,

humpies are as good as any other salmon, just different. the key is you HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. gut them and throw them on ice IMMEDIATELY and they will eat up excellent when caught bright in the river or salt. they are very oily and do well on the barbecue and in the smoker as well. I just got back from a trip to neah bay and we nailed 36 salmon total of 3 kings 5 silvers and the rest humpies YUM

If any of you ever snub your nose at Humpy fishing, you don't like fishing.   If you want the one the best times for a family to go and have a blast go to Valdez AK on the 4th of July time frame.  Literally you'll catch a 100-200 each in the course of a day.  Me- as much as I liked catching Kings, I didn't eat them either, maybe toss one in the smoker, but I was spoiled for years with fresh Reds so everything else was just that fishing for fun.  I got pictures of my kids when they were 3 and 4 with literally stringers full of Humpies, they would catch them on their little rods, one every cast.  Remember a few times having to really hold their hand while they crossed the river in Hope, cause they kept stepping on passing fish and falling.  Heck yea, humpy fishing is a blast....  From big ho daddy ones that interfer with Rainbow fishing to the motley crew getting ready to take on the river..

If you bleed them and ice them as soon as they hit the boat they are great eating.

The way I see it is when the humpies are running, you can catch fish all day and pick and choose which ones to eat.  I always bleed any fish I catch, it makes the meat taste less fishy.  When I rip the gills out, I always shoot the blood all over my Dad and little Bro, gives them a little luck

Spur_Ride and I have gone over to the puyallup river the last few seasons and never done real well. People all around us were catching fish, but we only would get one or two every 4 hours! The river is milky white, and we used corkys with pink yarn, with pencil lead sinker about two feet below the fly. Dose this sound right to the veteran humpy fisherman? Guess the weight would skip along the bottom a little slower that the current. Dont know what we were doing wrong!!!
