Out of state antelope hunts
« on: July 23, 2009, 01:24:18 PM »
Either next year or the following year I would like to do an antelope hunt.  I hear Wyoming is the place to go.  Does anyone have any experience with a do it yourself antelope hunt?  Are there over the counter tags available or is it all draw?  Any areas in these other states that would be a good place to start.

I know this is probably too early, but I would just like to know now if I really need to start collecting points or if I can just go and do it.  I would much rather do a 100% diy with no guides or trespass fees or anything like that.

Thanks

they're all draw unless there's leftovers. wyoming has units that are 100% success in the draws but they are usually mostly private land. land access is pretty easy and trespass fees are usually cheap. wyoming will provide you with landowners names that allow access. best thing to do is get on their website and get on the non-resident mailing list.

monstermuleys used to have a thing on their site that would tell you how many points for what units, odds, etc but i haven't seen it in a while.

there's also decent odds in montana. archery is 100% success in the draws, but you still have to put in.

Great areas near Casper, long drive, but to me that is part of the experience, hunted near there back in the 80's and got drawn this year, so we'll be making the journey to see what opportunities abound for next year and following seasons in regards to land owners, other animals, etc...  Wyoming has an awesome and easy way to get land owner listing, call the chamber of Commerce for what district your hunting, they'll send you ten pages of land owners and you just make the calls.  Out of all that I called 90% have said no problem hunting for Speed Goats on their lands, some have access fees (the better properties anyhow) of up to $300, but they really regulate how many folks on and off property and can tell you success rates from years past and where the antelope are.  Fish and Game guys have been overally talkative about areas, numbers, lands, locations etc....  Best I have ever heard from any Fish and Game Enforcement...  Draws rates for where we went was somewhere around 60% first time with no bonus points....  Will let you know how it was come end of Oct.

Wyoming is best.  I started in 2005 and haven't missed a year since, and have never paid a trespass fee.

Odds of drawing in the units with lots of public land are typically low.  Odds of drawing in units with lots of private land are typically high.

You can always get reduced price ($34) doe/fawn licenses in units with lots of public land available.  You can get up to four, depending on the unit.

Looks like a bunch of the same stuff I was looking for, thanks.  And thanks to everyone else that has chimed in.  I am still in college, but hopefully starting next year I will be doing a bit of hunting out of state.  I am getting a whitetail tag for Idaho this year and am pretty stoked about it.  My army buddy has some property out of Deary that borders the National Forest and seems to always find 150" + deer every year.

Check here to see how many leftover antelope licenses are still available in WY:

The Buffalo area has thousands of them and most of the land owners are pretty cool about letting you hunt them, they hate them with a passion.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

Do your homework to see what type of land is in the units before applying. I'm going to a new unit in Wyoming that has at least 1/2 of blm land, but the state lists it as hard to get access, we'll see. There were a lot of left over tags in it. Last year went to a unit in the center of the state with mostly blm, but had the max of 2 points.

Going to Mt. for the 3rd. time to the same unit, lots of blm and block management, but it takes points to get drawn.

That's all I do DIY.
