I am going to give it a try
« on: August 26, 2009, 03:29:11 PM »
I bought a Jones Calls " Last Call" and an Arizona Big Game Calls " T-Rex" and figured while I was out on my Elk hunting trip I would try to call in a bear some afternoon or whatever......
My question is , after reading the posts on this and other sites I see that when calling you recommend almost non-stop or no longer than 1 1/2 minute breaks for around an hour with series of 30-60 seconds and short breaks of 20-30 seconds..
The directions on the "T-Rex" say to call for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes...wait 5 and repeat.

Call as much as you can without passing out.  I vary it up when by myself.  I will call short series 30-90 seconds with short 15-30 second breaks, and then call long series 90-300 seconds with 1-2 minute breaks.  In all seriousness, if you are not buddy hunting then electronics is probably the way to go, but I am too much of a cheap ass to spend the money for a good e-caller.

The problem with stopping is bears seem to come on a string, until you stop calling.  Alot of times they then either loose interest or they wander off.  I think the reason they do this, and this is just my own theory so take if for what it's worth is they hear the sounds of animals being eaten all the time, however once the screaming stops, then whatever is eating whoever was screaming is usually moving whatever he was eating.  :)  Just my thoughts.  I can't seem to get a electronic caller loud enough for my personal preference so I have always used a mouth call and I rarely stop for more then 15 seconds or so.  Just long enough to see if there is any heavy breathing going on right behind me.   :o

I start out like an attack, then slow to a moan and suffering, throw in a crow call or two,and continue to suffer..If Im sure a bear is near I will switch to a cub bawling..I dont wait long between calls
