Vampire Buck?
« on: August 26, 2009, 04:53:59 PM »
Two years ago I shot a nice 4x4 whitetail in the N.E. corner. Had a skull mount done and my Taxidermist me something I had never seen before. The buck I killed had 2 upper K9 fangs about 1 1/4" forward from his teeth about 5/16" long. Anybody care to comment on this. I'll post pics when I can.

Probably similar to wolf teeth in horses....some herbivores will have canine type teeth it seems to be a genetic throwback and is more common in some breeds than others at least in horses.

I have had a couple of skulls through y shop with those.  Some times they will have only one.  Back in the day I guess deer use to have fangs.  Like the Chinese water deer.

Neighber killed a whitetail up Bonners Ferry last year that had "vampire teeth". Must be a little more common than we think?

Imagine how many deer actual have those.  he hunters/taxidermists that just cut the heads/horns off and throw them in the trash with out looking.  Most of the teeth are under the gum line and you need to scrape the gum away to find them.
