stupid question, buckshot?
« on: September 03, 2009, 01:45:32 PM »
if i would go hunting with a shotgun, would i need a scope to make good shots with buckshots?   how hard would it be to hit a deer using just a beadsight, lets say 25-45 yards?

It wouldn't be that hard at all.  Just spend some time practicing until your are comfortable and confident at that range.

A scope might be more of a hinderance than a help with a shot gun.

Practice a bit and know your range, and the guns.

Through the years we have done lots of shotgun hunts using 00 Buck. 3" Mags in 00 will floor a deer, we always shoot for the head. As for a scope, you will not need one, plus I would think it would just get in the way.

You will surprised at how far you can kill a deer with buckshot.  I have killed several deer with buckshot at around 50-60 yards.  Just remember YOU DO HAVE TO AIM.  Don't just point and shoot and think just because you have 15 pellets that you don't have to be right on.  Put the bead right on your target and BOOM!!

Sure you can hunt with a scoped shotgun. Why would it not be legal ???  Scoped rifles are legal, what's the difference?

I was just wondering because when I was much younger I went into a local gun shop and asked to buy scope rings for my 870 and the guy told me they where not legal for hunting?

Muzzleloaders are supposed to be "primitive" weapons. Add a scope to it and it's no longer primitive. Other states besides Washington are the same way in not allowing scoped muzzleloaders during the muzzleloader season. I know our two neighboring states, Oregon and Idaho, don't allow them.

We use scopes on ours, but we also hunt with rifled barrels and slugs.  You CAN hunt in firearm restricted areas with shot guns.  Im sighted in to 150 yards with mine.  Best blacktail and bear gun you will find.  These are all shotgun kills.

Well...Id hate to agree with BC chaser... :P

but a shotgun is an under appreciated big game gun! If ya can afford it, a rifled slug barrel and a 9 or 12 power scope are deadly! A 150 yard shot is completely doable!

Shotguns smack em hard and push through tons of brush to knock em down where they stand!!!

Ive killed probably 4 dozen big game animals with a slug and Ive always been happy with the result!

My buddy in GA kills abotu 10 deer a year using buck shot...  it has to be under 50 yards and he head shoots does and shoulder shoots bucks!

Ive head shot a few while fall turkey hunting...  always keep a oo buck shot round or two on my stock!!

again...none of this is meant to agree with BC Chaser :P
