Buying birds

Does anyone know of a good source of Quail or Chukar in the Skagit/Whatcom County area for dog training this time of year? I want to buy some but the sources I have won't have birds until spring.

Do you have any Pigeons around?  They are good for dog training and usually easy to obtain.

Pigeons have gotten really expensive.... at least over hear.  Unless you know someone where you can catch em in their barn they aren't nearly as cost effective any more.

I do have pigeons but I just got them and they have not had any broods yet so the ones I have won't return to my loft. I don't want to shoot them as I plant them but would on chukar or quail. My pigeons won't do me a whole lot of good until spring when they have babies. Any sources out there closer to Skagit or Whatcom counties?

I was reffering to feral pigeons.  I have homers now but when I first got my pup I would trap a bunch on the roof of my work.  Either way, sorry I can't help.  I remember you posting about NAVHDA, they might be able to help.

Thanks for the replies. I do have dairy barns near me that have lots of pigeons. Did you make your own trap? What did you find to work the best? Unfortunately NAHVDA guys near me are rare. The bulk of the guys are 4 hours or more away.

I bought my trap from Lions Country or Gun Dog Supply, I can't remember which.  It has two doors with bobs on opposite ends.  I used pigeon feed that contained popcorn, placed a little just outside the doors and a bunch in the middle of the trap.  I've read you'll do better if you leave the bobs open for awhile so the pigeons will get used to the trap but I trapped quite a few with only the very center bob fixed open.  The downside of trapping them is the inconsistency.  Some days you get a few and some days you wont get any. 
If I was you I would ask the farmers if you can net them at night.  Pigeons have terrible eyesight and I'm sure you could get a bunch with a fishing net and a flashlight.
How old is your pup?  What kind?

I don't screw her up. I have had labs before but this is my first pointer.

No luck.  Most of the folks are out or not willing to sell any more.  Not surprised with the time of year.

There's a dog trainer out of Lake Stevens that sells pheasants, pigeons, etc.....I'll see if i can track down her number. 

I would suggest calling some bird dog trainers in your area and see if they will tell you where they get their birds......this is how I found the Lake Stevens lady.
