What size egg globs for Samish kings?
« on: September 13, 2009, 04:50:23 PM »
I am curing some eggs from pinks and a coho.  Plan to fish the Samish, any recommendations on size?  I am using Pro-Cure Borax, glo pink, if it makes a difference....  Thanks

I do my skeins whole and cut to desired size while on the river, doing a batch from silvers as we speak ;)

x2, then I vacuum pack them, last forever, in case you do not use them all.

I like to cut them into baits prior to use. Its less messy. Especially on the samish where your waded out waist deep. Another thing that helps me out down there is scents. Most everyone uses Pro cure double stuff, and thats it. I like to soak my cured pre-cut baits in anise oil, shrimp oil, and somtimes liquid krill. Seems to be more productive.

Another good cure is the 4 cups water, 1 cup salt, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup borax.
Bring the water to a boil. Add the dry contents, and stir till dissolved. Then let it cool back to room temp. Put your pre-cut baits in the liquid and mix occasionaly. Depending on the size of the eggs let soak for 20-40 minutes. Pink and coho 20-25min. King and chum 30-40 min. If I want them dyed I will put some bad azz bait dye in the liquid. After soaking Lay the baits out on a cookie sheet over paper towel and put them in the fridge for a day. It helps them dry out a little. Then you can bag them with a little bit of borax, and or scent them. Be sure not to use too many eggs for this brine. 2-4 skeins of king or chum depending on size, and 6-8 for pinks and coho. If you have more eggs to cure double the ingredients.
This is my favorite cure and is less messy and more productive than Pro cure, for me anyway.
Be careful with the bait dye. Your wife will kick your azz :chuckle:

No kidding. I dont even open any of the bait dies in the house. A tiny puff of that stuff in the air will destroy everything.

I've had good luck wrapping skeins in red yarn, catches the teeth and they hold up longer.
