Duramax Diesel Question
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:08:49 AM »
Well I am finally at 100,000 -no more warranty on my 2500HD 06 Duramax and would like to get some better mileage, mind you once I take off those crappy Toyo's MT - I'll get back to what I used to get around 18-19mpg.  It is realistic to achieve much more mileage for the added cost of chipping, adding exhaust etc...  I am not a mechanic so just looking for more of the plug and play stuff.  And I don't want the truck sounding like a big rig going down the hwy, reason why I bought a Duramax over the Older Cummins and Power Stroke, Quiet...  So just looking to hear from a couple Duramax owners to see what worked for them.

Increased mileage is possible,if you can drive it like an adult. Most guys chip their truck and end up driving like they're 16 again. No increases there.

Hypertech is generally very safe and doesn't make the EGTs go sky high, not the strongest programmer, but safe. Edge, and Diablosport tend to run hot.

If you're going all out, check out EFI Live.

I agree.... Had the Hypertech Programmer III on my '01 Duramax and really liked it.  Good power gains, 2-4 mpg gain, and no problem towing anything...

Im running the Hypertech III on my 02 now. I have it on the #2 setting. I do have the AEM air intake...just dont have it installed yet. Just the Hypertech increased mileage around 2-3 mpg. Very easy to install. Im also running 285's for my tires. PB

OK, yes,,, I'm a Ford PSD owner..

But I feel the biggest bang for the buck is what allows air to flow through our diesels. I don't know what's availalbe for the intake on the IsuzuDura, but I'm sure there is something. Aftercooler and post turbo down tube and larger diameter exhaust should allow things to flow better, with the added benifit of cooling in the process. EVerything I've read, is that you should always enhance turbo cooling before (or at the same time) as computer programming. I would add that installing temperature metering is an added plus.

On my PSD, I dropped 250 degrees on EGT's for a hard pull up a pass and got another 2mpg by installing a larger higher flowing exhaust system and modifying the intake. 'Your mileage may vary'.

Doesn't matter what brand, they're just big air pumps.

I suggest that you check out another forum.. TheDieselStop.com

If you're going to start down the road of diesel power upgrades, you really need to consider free flowing intake/exhaust and guages before you consider adding more fuel.  And no - free flowing does not necessarily mean noisy.  Do your homework and find out who's tuning you want to run, I'm sure there are custom tuners for Dmax that can write whatever tunes you want.  I'm a Powerstroke guy myself.

Also a 7.3 PSD owner, but as other guys have mentioned the most important thing is to get the intake and exhaust done.  I myself have the AFE stage 2 intake and 4" turboback exhaust with the Edge programmer.  Intake and exhaust before or at the same time as the tuner.  The Edge is nice because you don't have to spend the extra in gauges, it comes with the pyro and reads everything else off the factory computer.  I did all the work myself and it was relatively simple if you have some mechanical ability.  The sky is the limit on all the extra stuff you can do to these diesels, and it can become addicting.  By the way, the exhaust work doesn't necessarily make the pickup louder, it just makes her purr.
