Bobcat Down - How old do you think it is?
« on: October 13, 2009, 07:02:56 PM »
Hey Everyone,

I shot this Bobcat the other day with my Ruger 10/22 - 30 yard shot. I haven't seen many in the woods before, only one other one that I can remember. I know that it isn't small, but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea on how old it is or whether it is decent size or not. I'm getting a full body mount done on it, hopefully with it swiping at a rabbit or a grouse, should be pretty awesome. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks!

Thats a pretty cat.  Congrats.  Recently just got my first cat I thought it was a pretty big cat but ended up only weighing 19lbs.

Biggest one I ever seen dead was 38 lb female shot a few years back by a friend of mine..that thing was a hog.

Yeah, it is a male. I will post more pics later, they are on another computer.... It's pretty sweet that I had the 10/22 in my hands, I shot it in the head and there wasn't an exit wound, so it is in great condition for the mount.

Bucklucky, or Charlies Taxidermy is doing mine. I think he is around $750 for full body. Check back in the taxidermy section at a bobby he finished around a month ago. Its beautiful. Mine will be climbing on this unique juniper branch. When I get it back from him, I'll carve the foam to look like a snow drift. It will be a pedestal mount when its done. I shot it last January. It was a good sized tom around 22lbs with a perfect thick coat.

I was actually out grouse hunting with my newly sighted in 10/22 and happened to run across it. It ran across the road and actually stopped about 30 yards on the other side. I just bought a 4-12X40 scope on it and sighted it in that day. It was pretty awesome. You might be able to see in the pic that I shot it right above its right eye.

I understand what your saying, but they can watch all they want.  I've stated many times on here that I used to run bobcats in OR, ID and even way back growing up in MO.  They are more then welcome to stop by my house anytime.

Beautiful cat! I'd guess it at 1.5 years old. I've taken many since the '70s and it is small but has vibrant colors which will make a great mount. I saw one the other day on the east side and it was the darkest bobcat I've ever seen.

They can be called in, but you have to have a little more Patience then when calling yotes.  Plus in my experience they are much easier to call at night.

I had never seen a bobcat in my twenty + years of hunting until I started calling.  I just started calling last year and have already called in 4 cats for sure and one that I am pretty sure was a cat but all I saw was flashes of fur.  I got shots off on two of them and killed one.  They just appear out of thin air in this heavy brush down here and they usually see me at the same time I see them.

That is an awesome cat!  It has great color, not like what I am used to seeing on most people mounts (thats the only place i have ever seen them.  Never once have I seen one in the wild).

Englewood, I don't yet know how to put your question in the gray box yet. Still new to this site and have a few things to try out.

Do I call them? No but that is in the plans.
I have trapped them (in the '70s) and seen (and shot) many while hunting. They are more numerous than most imagine them to be. I spend a lot of time getting exercise all year long in the woods so I see them year-round. I walked up to 5 feet of one last year. Odd situation and funny too!

Many have eaten my chickens only to be 'gotten' after being fattened up.

A real good age indicator on bobcats is the skull. How big it is will give you an idea of how old it is (that is what I used in the picture to judge this cat's age). How big the body is can be relevant to how well it is eating. I also look at the coloring. Usually younger cats have more vibrant color characteristics which makes for better mounts. Older cats bleach-out a bit and the spots can tend to fade on the edges.
