There's proof
« on: December 29, 2007, 04:27:41 PM »
Its not bigfoot, though I think I saw a couple gals in Winthrop that were close decendants.....
.....its not wolves, though I bet there were some within miles of my location.....
There's a big fat cow elk a long ways from where she is supposed to be.   ELK IN THE METHOW

Wow, was there any more with her? Was she on private property? I hunted for elk up there a few years ago. I found some but they were on private property and owner would not let me and my dad hunt there. There was some nice bulls too.

You know, I'm not sure.  Its such a patchwork of private and public.  She isn't a pet by any means.  She was alone.  There was alot of track for one elk, but she was the only one seen.

Yeah but they cause too much problems with the cattle ranchers. I know a few places to look for them and have heard where a few are but those areas will remain secret for now :P

Not much of a secret if you live there.  They have been there for years.  The game department has kept them in pretty good check though.  They are afraid it would devistate the deer herd I guess.  They used to just killl them on site.  Now they have at least opened a liberal season for them.  I chased a 7x7 one year around up there along with about 5 other guys.  As much sign as I saw in another portion of the methow, I would guess the elk really like it there.

There was some up in the Pasayten/Andrews creek, but it burned, so not sure where those went.  This gal and those you saw up Sweetgrass could easily be from them.
There is getting to be a nice herd of them in the Twisp River, in a couple of the drainages, and the Chiliwist has had them for aobut 30 years+.

yeah there was a few  in the pasayten last year but now I dunno. I think more than any thing the main reason the gameys dont want they causing problems with cattle ranchers with tearing down fences and coming down low especially during winter tearing up hay piles. Game biologists say its because of the big okanogan county mule deer herd but if your really think about it deer and elk dont exactly feed on the same things.

I would too I saw a  good sized herd in the methow  one time. They basically lived on private property the whole time moving across every once in awhile. Elk are very hard to  predict though especially when in small numbers. So it makes it hard. There was elk being seen during the summer out in the sinlahekin. If you want to get that good season though and dont feel bad about shooting them wait for them to come off the rez. They have some nice bulls on the rez.
