Two whole elk in back of a truck today
« on: December 30, 2007, 07:17:05 PM »
I was heading South on Meridian today and saw to small rag horns (Loaded whole) in the back of a black full size truck today December 30th.   Saw no tags on the antlers... Other then the tags being on the antlers what is open in the Puyallup or Mashell unit to hunt this late?

Could have been many things...out of state hunters (whole, unskinned, I hope not), Natives (Indians), or permit holders (AHE). I would have to check the regs regarding the AHE thing though...don't know of any that run at this time, usually some staring in Jan. and some ending in Mid Dec.

The tag doesn't have to go on the horns...in fact I rarely put them there. If it's an animal that is not going on the wall, then I roll it up, tuck it into the ear, and punch a whole in the ear, and tie it off, well inside. That way it won't get lost. In Idaho, I attach it to the hindquarter that has the evidence of sex still attached, per their laws (biggest piece retained and evidence of sex must be attatched to animal).

I highly doubt poacher, for the simple fact they drove down meridian in full view...either very gutsy move or smart, thinking nobody would call them on it. Either way, if you wrote down there plate, it wouldn't hurt to call it in. A Gamey would simply contact the registered owner and look into it. If it's legit, no worries, if its not...bonus points for you and busted for them.

I have one of the Malaga any elk tags for AHE, it's open from Aug.1-March 31. This is a huntmaster only tag. I have to be contacted by him before I can hunt.
