300 RUM

Anybody have a rifle in this caliber? What do you think of it?
Looks like a good caliber to me just wondering what those of you who own or have shot one think of it.

I'm thinking about getting a Rem. Model 700 xcr in 300 rum.

I had one it was a dog.

The Remington stock rifles are too light IMHO to handle the pressures and accuracy suffers.

Stick with a 300 win mag or 7mm rem mag or 300 weatherby in accumark.

I tried a ton of hand load combos in the gun as well as all the limited factory stuff available and the gun would not shoot. I consider minimum for a hunting rifle to be acceptable 1 2/2 inches at 100 yards and this gun did not offer that.

That's my experience others may differ. Don't be seduced by the ballistics.

I have a 700 lss which is now sitting in a mc millan classic. it was a PITA from the factory. had a bunch of little issues that I worked out. now it is a 100% sub MOA gun. I sold my m70 classic with a christensen barrel in 300RUM. that gun was also a little finicky but once I figured it's diet out it was a dream to carry and hunt with, but at sub 7# it broke bedding and killed every single scope I ever put on it.....twas an expensive expierience.

I would own another, but in reality there is not a "need" for it. I killed 2 elk this year with my 6.5-06 and they died just as dead and just as fast. if you are looking for a gun to push big heavy SMK's aot to rediculous range this is a great case, but the twist rates in stock barrels are topped out around 200grs.

I managed to get 180 tsx's to shoot very well (.5-.7) in both guns with 110grs of AA8700, both guns came in close on velocity of 3350-3400 depending on the gun and temp.

I will not tell you what I did with a 165gr btsp sierra, but lets just say that it is hard to believe....and hell on coyotes.

all in all I would recommend a gun of at least 9lbs if you want to shoot it much, my 700 is about 8.25 all up with a zeiss 3.5-10x44 and it is not too bad, but I have broke a leupold mount at this weight. I would go heavier just to keep it reliable....nothing sucks more than a broken gun at the moment of truth.

back to my "need" statement. if you are looking for a hunting rifle, the rums are pretty tough on scopes. you will need to buy top quality glass and mounts. if you go with a winchester they have that lame .330 hole spacing in th rear and mounts can be tough to find. savage makes one for fair money but they are ugly IMO. if you are even remotely recoil shy I would back up to the 300win or wsm. 110 grs of powder is a hell of a lot worse then 70 and the velocity difference is good for about a foot at 500yds.....not that big of a deal since you gotta hold over or clicl up anyhow.

I have one and absolutely love it.  You can shoot it if you like.  Only killed one spike with it, but man is has some serious power.  Mine is a custom built on a 700 action with a HS Precision stock.  Shoots a 180gr at 3400fps or a 165 at 3600. (Chrono'd not guessed)

hmm Maybe Ill just get a 300 win or a 7mm rem mag. I would like a 7mm-08 also haha. Soo many guns. The list goes on but mayeb Ill look into the 300 win. I dotn wanna be buyin new scopes all the time.  If i wanted a range gun thatd be different Id have a really high quality expensive scope but money needs to be spent on other stuff that goes along with the hunt. I have a 30-06 but for some reason I just dont feel at home with it. Have killed 1 deer and 1 elk with it but its just not my gun/caliber. I like the old 60's marlin 30-30 much better shot more naimals with it also. Just lookin for a good huntin gun. have also looked at the 280 rem and a .280 AI would be nice but I dont have the money to have one built(that is on my list to happen someday).

I don't know anything about ruining scopes, and have never heard that before this post.  Mine has a Lilja #5 26", and it weighs slightly more then stock with a Leupold 4.5x14.  I could easily weigh it if you like.  I only have about 5-6 hundred rounds with no brake.  Never had to re-adjust my zero other then when I changed loads.  Friend has one (Stock BDL) with about 3-4 hundred rounds with a 6.5x20 Leupold.  The last 100 rounds in his has been with a brake installed.  He did not like the recoil and he went from an 06 to the 300RUM.  Neither one of us have had any kind of scope or mount problem (both standard leupolds).
     Based on the guns you are talking about the RUM or even a WM is a substantial increase in recoil/power.  If you are just looking for a rifle then one of the standard calibers or mags would be great.  Ammo is a lot cheaper and easier to find.  I'm using different powder, but FPS is the same as High Country to recoil would also be the same.

My dad has a rem 700 in 7mm I do like that gun quite a bit pretty darn acccurate too.

You are covering a lot of things that have so many variables.  I will try my best here.  What is accurate for you?  Most factory rifles will easily shoot in the 2" or less range with factory ammo they like.  With reloads and a little gun tinkering you can make a stock gun shoot around 1" or so.  All centerfire rifles are easily capable of shooting 500yds, but how much bullet energy and size of trajectory arc needs to be factored in.  Do you want a flat shooting gun or are you able to know exactly how far to hold over?  I don't know what is required to be fun to shoot, but all guns are fun to shoot regardless of location.  7mm Remington is a great caliber that will kill anything in North America.

Yes I agree. I just get confused onw hat to get for a new rifle and have soo many things I want ;)maybe winnnign the lotto is in order. I do think that a 7mm will be good for now and very capable of taking most big game at 500 yards with a 165 grain bullet retainign enough energy to kill elk fairly easily and drop deer. Should be a good caliber for longrange shooting at the range too.

if you want a gun that kills like lightning and is as flat as is made look at the 257wby. 100gr tsx's at 3600-3800 are amazin on deer and elk. I have used mine to well over 400yds and had crazy results. and it is recoil friendly too, a vanguard can be had for a fair price and brass can be easily made from cheap 7rem mag brass.

75gr v-max's can go over 4g's pretty easily for song dogs too.....you can see mine in action soon.

No sandbags, etc....  I have no complaints about the gun, I purchased the long action....

The 300 Rum is a great long range round. It has awesome down range energy and is a fairly flat shooter, also has a wide variety of factory loads if thats your thing. The Rem 700 XCR is a sweet out of the box rig.

Thats pretty good accuracy at 300 yards across the hood of your truck.
