Want to buy decoys
«
on:

I want to buy some more decoys, especially species other than the standard dozen or two mallards. What does everyone have in their spread? What do people recommend? I plan to hunt western washington the most, with some hunting elsewhere.

That's what I was thinking. I plan on starting with maybe a half dozen of each. Does anyone notice that have a certain number/proportion of each is better? Meaning, should have a majority of mallards, or does it matter?

i usually take a look at what kinds of birds are in the area or what kinds of birds you want to attract. but on the other hand i have had all kinds of birds come into just a set of mallard deks. i just have always had the thought of variety is better

I would pick up some of the widgeon decoys. The teal will land with the teal decoys, but I like the larger blocks as they are visible at further distances. I would save the money. I have about 5 dozen teal decoys and haven't used them in years.

I just saw an article about those knotty ducks I'm ordering one on monday. Like most have said widg/teal were my first additions to the mallard decoys. Also just added some uvision pintails haven't had enough time over them to say much about them.

The Greenhead Gear Bluebill and Wigeon decoys on Cabela's are AWESOME!!!! I have some and they are great! Those would be great adds to your spread. Pintail of the GHG brand are also very good! Geese are always a plus if you have the money for them since they are ridiculously expensive!!!

I have 8 pintail decoys that I set in a group slightly separated from the main body of mallards. I don’t know if it matters to the ducks but I think they look good.

I have about:
6 doz mallards
3 doz pintails
2 doz wood ducks
1-2 doz teal
1 doz widgeons
1 doz coot
1.5 doz floater geese
5 doz goose shells
handfull of cans
and i'm probably forgetting something. They add up over 10 years+ of collecting Just get a doz at a time every once in a while and you'll have a million in no time, or pick some up on craigslist and fix 'em up.
