Hooked while fishing
« on: January 04, 2008, 02:34:00 AM »
Ok, has anyone ever hooked themselves while fishing, or worse yet had some idiot hook you. And, I'm not talking about a little blood and pain, I'm talking about a trip to Dr. to get the hooks out.

I never had to go to the doctor. I removed the hook myself. But here is the story........

I was down south in central america sport fishing :fishin:. well i caught onto a nice yellow fin tuna and as we gaft it and brought it up to the boat the Hook came free and launched itself into my arm. :'( Hurt like hell.
Only thing we could do was push it through the rest of the way and cut the barb off with pliers and pull back out. just about want to crap youreself. Not sure if you guys have seen the hooks on someof those hooks but they arent small and they are usually double barbed. Mine was. It didnt go to far in so it was just under the skin about a quarter inch. But that was deep enough that you wouldnt want to just pull it out. Big hook to. That was about 5 years ago and i still remember that day.Almost like it was yesterday. OUCH. still have the scar too....

Thats alright though. Still not as bad as stabbing myself while i was caping my deer this year ......Hi shadowcats wife. yes i know im not suppose to play with knives anymore :hello:...... :chuckle:

My story isn't as painful, but I did have to have a dr. remove the treble hook from ear. I was trout fishing next this idiot who kept whipping his 1/4 oz spinner passed my head, (eventhough I told him if he hooked me I would throw his dumb ass in the river) well needless to say he did. Right in the ear, buried two of hooks in the upper part of ear lobe. I tried to push them through, but the cartilage was too tough. Worst part about it was I never got to throw the dumb ass in the drink. He jumped off the rock he was on and moved down stream.  Just left me there with the spinner in my ear.  :bash:

I don't know if I could of let him be...I have an awful temper when someone hurts me and it was preventable.

But my story is about a buddy. We were fishing on the Little Su for reds. Matt found some gear in the river up stream from where I was at. He was fumbling with the found gear when he slipped and buried a HUGE snagging set up into the muscle of the thumb area of the hand. Lucky for us a doc was fishing near us. He asked Matt if he could stand the pain of removal without drugs, Matt OKed the process and the doc pushed it through etc. Great guy, gave Matt a weeks worth of antibiotics and a couple of pain pills for the ride home.

My grandfather is a ER doctor in Alaska. I had to hold my buddy down while he pushed a halibut hook (yes the big ones with the lead weight) threw his hand. It was gruesome. :puke: :puke:

I hooked pixie treble in my ear when some yahoo had the wind grab his cast and whip it into my face.  That was not nearly as bad as the Halibut hook.  I got it out at home.

SISU...did you wear your safety goggles fishing the reds? my buddy from ak said it was about mandatory on the kenai.
i've never hooked myself but seen lots of bad stuff happen on the salmon river in new york. legal weighted treble hook salmon snagging...bad mix. my buddy has had a rapala plug hanging from his rear...we had to ride our bikes to the doctors to get it removed. my stepdad has had a fly stuck in his cheek and one in his ear lobe, my grandfather pulled both of them out.

I have had fish impale me with hooks a few different times. This year while fishing for Coho I reached down to pull a 2/0 owner out of a nice buck and had him drive the hook through my left thumb and up through the nail about mid span of the the nail. We cut the barb and pulled it out backwards, I didn't want to pull it out through the thumb nail. :o
Another good one was fishing for Steelhead on the Sauk.  I told my buddy to throw the plugs out and lifted my arm up just in time for my buddy to cast his tadpolly and drive his siwash into the bone on the back side of my fore arm, it sank so deep it imbedded in the bone and we could not pull it out. We cut the hook off the plug floated the river down to the Goverment bridge and headed back to Darrington where the hook was removed. They strapped my arm down to his weight bench in the garage while my buddy and his wife held the arm down my other buddy clamped on the hook with some visegrips and yarded it out. Then got infected and on and on  and on.

My little sister got a hook in the neck from my little bro when they were like 4 and 5 or something like that. She has a real pronounced vein on her neck when she would cry as a kid...and it was right on that (not through it, but real close to puncturing it)....it ended without incident (think my dad just clipped the barbed end and slide it out) but it was a close one.

ive had it happen alot...when fishing kings i use to run 3/0 hooks when fishing eggs. and when a fish would spit the hook and the hook and weight would fly behind me i would just whip it back to the water...well that ended with alot of hooks past the barbs into the back of my neck lol. but i run barbless hooks so its not so bad.

the other day up at tokul a buddie got a hook under his nail past the barb. when trying to land s fish for another buddie. that one there hurts bad

I was flyfishing with Idabooner on the Methow, back in the young bone days, and I buried a Royal Coachman into my thumb up to the shank.  Unofortunately I hadn't reached barbless yet.  We had to go snip it off and pull it out.  Then got a tetanus shot.  That was probably the worst part.

I have been hooked a few times in the hand while bass fishing with rapalas. I have had to push a few all the way through and cut the barb.

I had a few pictures e-mailed to me of a guy with a hook in his eye. Would not be fun.

My 2nd pair of glasses, my go fishing-shooting-hiking etc glasses are among other things (shatterproff etc) oversized also for this reason.

Never been to the ER. But as a 10yo fishing with Dad and my pal and his Dad. I got hooked.

My buddy's Dad ,the Flyfisher, caught me in the back of the neck with his backcast. When he whipped that pole forward and the line went tight.....every critter from Pilchuck to Peoria ran off.. :chuckle:
