« on: November 19, 2009, 08:27:10 PM »
well i killed a hog blacktail today, 5x4 plus eyegaurds on both sides. he's huge. brought my camera into download the pics and it erased them all and i cant get my email to work to get the pics my dad took and emailed to me, to top it all off my wife is being a pain in the ass. I'm not going to let this get me down tho. this is the biggest deer Ive ever shot, you guys will just have to wait for pics. I'm not much of a scorer but i think he will go over 130 maybe push 140

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

i could do a story. well it starts out by me absolutely working my butt off for a deer this year (literally worked my butt off, lost 12 pounds) i hunted everyday of general except for my daughters birthday. must have put 50 miles on my boots and was getting blanked the whole season. well i had high hopes for late buck, since it ended on my birthday i thought that may be a good omen, was it ever.

the morning started off bad. h iked up into one of my spots (bout a 2 mile hike) only to discover i had made a bad choice. the wind was howling up there and i know from experience with these particular deer that they will be laying down in that crap. so i made the decision to turn right around and hike out. so I'm thinking crap i wasted a morning that i should have been at my other spots.

i get back to the truck and head across the river. wind wind wind. it wasn't looking good. i busted a doe in some heavy reprode and that was about it. to the next spot.

heading up to my next spot i get back into the wind, i figure crap this is pointless ill just turn around up here and head out. but before i did something made me check one of my usual old clear cuts i like to glass. as I'm glassing the edge just about to walk away i see a deer out of the corner of the binos. a buck. over 200 yards and i cant tell how big other than he's legal. get to a rest, settle down, adjust for wind, boom.

saw him jump like he was hit through the scope. did cartwheels over to where he was standing only to find no blood  :yike: i cant have missed i had him dead on. look around no deer. well it was a lot of wind i think to myself, but i just cant have missed. look some more, no deer. now I'm worried. i pick up his trail again (saw where he jumped) go the other way and there he is. i almost did a back flip when i saw how big he was. I'm pretty sure everybody in the wood heard me yelling. i must have looked pretty silly there all by myself but i dint care i was pumped. then the drag started.

i drug him with out gutting him first because i had to drag him through some nasty stuff and I'm picky about my meat, it almost killed me. to a hour and 15 min to drag him 150 yards. (the adrenaline wore off about half way through) when i finally got him field dressed and in the truck i was still so jacked up that once i got in the truck i had to kick the door open to puke. i was pretty stoked about this deer not only because of how big he is but i worked hard for this sucker, really hard.

went back and ranged the shot. 268 yards with about a 15 to 20 mph crosswind. took out both his lungs and the top of his heart with a 200 gr accubond out of the 300 winny. I'm still floating, man what a season.
